Preparing for the Post-Covid HVAC Industry

With coronavirus vaccines available to more people and local governments easing lockdown restrictions, U.S. businesses are now grappling with the newest questions: What does a post-Covid country look like?

Already, the HVAC industry has begun seeking answers as it relates to local businesses. Luckily, positive news appears to be on the horizon.

Analysts say HVAC companies focusing on residential and business sales will see an uptick as owners seek to restore and upgrade their systems, particularly in areas where indoor air quality (IAQ) is a concern. Industries that include healthcare, education and entertainment (theaters) will be looking to upgrade their systems to maximize IAQ – a largely overlooked issue before the pandemic.

Researchers found the HVAC market is poised for growth through 2025. More specifically, the demand for HVAC equipment in the U.S. will take off.

“North America holds the major share in the HVAC equipment market,” Shibuya Data Count found. “The demand for HVAC equipment in the United States is forecasted to witness exponential growth. Advancements are likely to result in rapid gains, with a rise in the expenditure on construction. Growth in repair investments, as replacement demand, is contributing to the market growth. There is a rising demand for HVAC efficient systems with sophisticated technology.”

For The EverRest Group clients, the optimistic forecast means staying the course and implementing the proven method. As a reminder, let’s look at the EverRest 5 Critical Components of Success:

  1. Work towards a sales mix of 80% replacements and 20% service calls
  2. Use EverRest methods to maximize replacement leads and sales
  3. Keep technicians in 4 to 5 homes a day
  4. Keep replacement gross margins in line with 20% net profits
  5. Always operate with urgency

A key component of success using the EverRest method is ensuring technicians understand their role in the process. From the moment they step foot onto a customer’s property, technicians play a critical role in the company. Our approach provides guidance for technicians to uncover the HVAC system defects, malfunctions and breakdowns that competitors often miss.

On every repair call and tune-up technicians must perform lead generation tasks:

  • Check coils for
    • Freon leaks
    • Excessive rust
    • Restricted airflow
    • Leaking pans
  • Check heat exchangers for
    • Cracks
    • Excessive rust
  • Check compressors for
    • Poor megohmmeter readings
    • Low or high amperage draw
  • Check motors for
    • Bad bearings
    • Bearing seals leaking lubrication
  • Check air ducts for
    • Air leaks
    • Restricted air flow
    • Mold

After a full inspection, technicians may uncover mandatory lead conditions in an HVAC system that should be addressed quickly, such as:

  • Moldy air handlers or supply ducts
  • Grounded compressors
  • Leaky evaporators, condenser coils or coil pans
  • Heat exchangers or faceplates with cracks
  • Compressors with a megohmmeter reading in red
  • Poor system performance or operating cost

Once a mandatory lead condition is noted, technicians should contact a supervisor for an immediate inspection. The supervisor can then explain the concerns to the homeowner and discuss the advantages of new equipment over significant repairs.

Sometimes technicians find system glitches that do not meet the mandatory lead conditions. Such secondary lead conditions still need attention, such as:

  • Excessively rusty, dirty, corroded or damaged coil pans, coils and heat exchanges
  • Compressors with a megohmmeter reading in yellow or an unsatisfactory amperage draw
  • Faulty bearings or motors with oil leaks
  • Compressors with a caution (yellow) megohmmeter reading and poor amperage
  • Multiple minor repairs or a single extensive repair

Using the EverRest system, HVAC companies can save property owners from the headaches that come with unexpected breakdowns. The EverRest system also helps HVAC business owners provide much-needed services as the country moves towards recovery and a post-Covid world.
